Site updated 4th March 2006

This part of the npc Solar site contains assorted photos, links and information related to our Solectria Force EV (Electric Vehicle). This is the transportation we use to do solar system site visits, not a huge diesel truck!

The Solectria Force is based on a 1999 Geo Metro and runs on a single string of 26 flooded NiCd batteries from SAFT of France. These are 6V modules, giving a nominal DC pack voltage of 156V. The drive system is actually AC with the controller converting the DC from the pack to 3-phase AC to drive the motor. The car has a range of 60-80 miles based on mixed freeway/surface-street driving and closer to 90 miles around town. The top speed is around 70mph and the energy consumption is around 250Wh/mile. We are on the E-9 Time-of-Use rate with PG&E and mostly charge after midnight, so we pay around 1.5 cents per mile for electricity.

Various aspects of owning and driving an electric vehicle will also be documented here.
